Who we are
A lab, not a course platform.
We are surrounded by research, technology, life sciences, and ideas. More importantly, we are surrounded by people who believe that knowledge should lead somewhere. That belief shapes Metis.
We create applied learning programs for a world being transformed by artificial intelligence: for students preparing for careers that are still emerging, for professionals whose work is changing, for educators shaping how the next generation learns, and for curious people who want a credible place to begin.
We do not think learning should mean consuming more content. We think it should change what you can see, understand, question, and do. That is why Metis operates as a knowledge lab rather than a course platform. Every program begins with a question worth asking. We explore it, test it, refine it, and build around what matters, so that what reaches a learner is useful, rigorous, and made for the real world.
What began in North Carolina now reaches learners and institutional partners in India and a growing network of universities and collaborators. Different places, different learners, the same belief: ask questions worth asking, and create insights worth keeping.
What we do

A learning program is not a slide deck. Each of ours arrives whole, with the reading, the cases, the practice and the assessment already in place.
Design
Every program is built complete: chapters, verified cases, hands-on labs, assessments and the tools that go with them. Written in plain language, to be read with pleasure, and reviewed line by line before it is called finished.
Deliver
Programs reach learners directly, self-paced on our platform, and reach institutions ready for the classroom or the learning platform, packaged to open standards, with faculty in charge of teaching and assessment.
Partner
We work with universities, institutions and organizations across science and education: as a credit-bearing course, as a value-added course, or as a program developed together in one of our twelve development areas.
The standard
What every program is held to.
Our first programs are in artificial intelligence, but the purpose is broader: to create enduring educational programs for a changing world. Whatever the subject, each program is held to the same standard.
- Plain language. Written to the standard a good newspaper holds itself to, so that the effort goes into the ideas, not into decoding the sentences.
- Real cases, verified. Every case describes a real organization and a real outcome, fact-checked against primary sources before it is used.
- Practice, not just reading. Real tools in the learner's hands and real problems in front of them, with the judgment to weigh what came back.
- Reviewed line by line. Every program passes through internal and external review, and is revised until it reads the way we would want to read it ourselves, before it is called finished.
- Complete on arrival. Reading, cases, practice, assessment, completion records, and the packages an institution's platform needs, all in place from the first day.
The company
Metis Knowledge Lab, Inc.
Metis Knowledge Lab, Inc. is a North Carolina corporation based in Chapel Hill, led by an international team of experts drawn from research, higher education, and professional practice. It develops, owns, and licenses multidisciplinary learning programs to colleges, universities, professional organizations, businesses, and other institutions worldwide, and offers them directly to learners.
Its first two programs, Applied AI For All and AI Foundations For All, are the beginning of a broader portfolio. The next programs are taking shape in twelve development areas, from AI agents and quantum technology to nature's engineering and digital strategy, developed with partners in the research and conference communities where that work already happens.
Every program is written by specialists in its field and built around verified cases rather than claims. The team brings together scientists, educators, and practitioners who have spent their careers in research institutions, universities, and professional organizations, and who now put that experience into programs anyone can learn from.
In India, programs are delivered through the Advanced Computing Research Society, Chennai, an independent channel partner: a registered not-for-profit research foundation and technical society whose conference cycle and research community anchor our work there.
The name and the mark
Μῆτις: wise counsel, practical intelligence.
In Greek, Μῆτις is the intelligence that works in practice: wise counsel, skill, and judgment applied to the world as it is. It is the quality we hope every program leaves behind.
The mark carries the same idea. The letter M for Metis; an infinity form for continuous learning; an eye for curiosity and observation; and an orbit for the interconnected people, ideas, and society that knowledge moves through. Beneath it, three words describe the journey from asking a question to understanding the answer.
